Winter and cold-weather garments are often overlooked or inaccurately reproduced by living historians, reenactors, and costumers. With proper research and a well-drafted pattern, however, there is no reason to compromise on authenticity or comfort. This new blanket coat pattern, sometimes referred to historically as a capote or match coat depending on the context, adds not only warmth and protection but also a well-documented layer of historical accuracy to your impression.
Developed using extensive research from period accounts, images, and descriptions spanning the 1760s through the early 1800s, this pattern offers a higher standard of authenticity for historical portrayals across a wide range of settings. With your purchase, you will receive both a professionally scaled pattern and detailed historical notes to help guide your choices in fabric, construction, and regional use. Whether you're portraying French Canadian settlers, British civilians, provincial troops, American revolutionaries, or French and British forces from the end of the Seven Years’ War through to the War of 1812, the blanket coat is a documented and versatile cold-weather garment.
While the iconic white "point" blanket coat is well known, period sources show these coats were also made from a variety of materials and blankets. They were worn from Quebec to Virginia, allowing you to incorporate them into many different impressions.
The pattern is available in sizes from Small to Extra Large (up to 50" chest). It is drafted with multiple size options so you can select the version that best suits you. If needed, you can also print other sizes. Unlike original coats, which were often issued in standard sizes from military stores, this pattern gives you the option to tailor your garment after making a mock-up, or adjust the finished product to your preference.
This digital pattern is designed for home printing. You can print and assemble it using standard paper, without waiting for shipping or needing to visit a store. If you make a mistake, simply reprint the affected section. The pattern can be stored digitally or kept in hard copy once printed, making it practical, flexible, and historically accurate.
By ordering this pattern, you will be receiving a digital copy, not a physical copy and instructions will be provided as to assist you with printing the pattern, at home, making it quick and accessible (as well as affordable) for everyone.
